About Skill Levels & Ratings
Skilled and open play courts are setup so that players of the same skill level match off against each other. At Pickleplex, you’ll see a lot of different levels in our schedules, and we even offer women-only or men-only slots to offer the best playing experience.
Did You Know About Pickleball Ratings?
Pickleball uses a rating system to show how skilled a player is.
Ratings usually go from 1.0 (brand-new beginner) to 5.5 or higher (professional level). These ratings are based on how well a player hits the ball consistently, controls their shots, and uses smart strategies during games.
There are a few common rating systems, like DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating), which tracks match results to estimate a player’s skill level.
Pickleball Skill Rating Chart (Reference Guide)
The majority of casual players fall between 3.0 and 3.5, while players rated 4.5 and above are usually competing in high-level tournaments.
1.0 - New Beginner
Just learning the rules and how to keep score
2.0 - Beginner
Can hit the ball over the net but inconsistently
2.5 - Advanced Beginner
Starting to rally and understands basic positioning
3.0 - Lower Intermediate
Can keep longer rallies and serve reliably
3.5 - Intermediate
Uses control, starts using strategy and soft shots
4.0 - Advanced
Consistent shots, good teamwork, strong court awareness
4.5 - Advanced Competitive
High consistency, strong strategy, tournament level
5.0+ - Expert/ Pro
Elite skill, speed, and strategy at the highest level
Don’t know your rating? That’s ok.
Most people begin by guessing their own rating when they start playing. That’s a good place to start. We also offer clinics and assessments to help get your rating or re-assess your level, once you’ve begun your pickleball obsession.

At Pickleplex we want you to feel at home – from the very moment you step in the door. So there are absolutely no silly or awkward questions to ask. We have a few frequently asked questions here – to help you know more about what to expect.
Do I need a membership for lessons, clinics & coaching?
No, you don’t need a membership. Lessons, clinics, and coaching sessions are open to both members and non-members.
I’m only a single player - is that ok?
Absolutely. Most lessons and clinics are designed for individual sign-ups, so you’ll be grouped with others at a similar skill level.
When should I “book a Pro” for a private lesson?
Private lessons are a great option if you want focused, one-on-one instruction. They’re ideal if you’re brand new, looking to improve quickly, or want to work on specific parts of your game.
I don’t own a paddle - how can I get one?
No problem. Paddles are available to use during lessons and beginner programs, so you don’t need your own to get started.
How much do private lessons cost?
Pricing varies by location and coach, but private lessons are offered at an additional cost. You can view exact pricing when booking at your local club.
Can I re-schedule my private lesson?
Yes, private lessons can typically be rescheduled or cancelled in advance (usually with at least 12 hours’ notice).
